- Every water heater needs a temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve with a drain to the outside, ending 6 to 24 inches above the ground, pointing down.
- In a garage, any heater that can make a glow, spark or flame must have its burner or elements at least 18 inches above the floor.
- In an attic, an approved safe pan with at least a 3/4 inch drain is required.
- Gas water heaters (other than direct vent) may not go in bathrooms, bedrooms or closets opening into them.
- Tankless heaters usually need more gas; existing gas piping must be sized for the load, and new or altered gas piping must be pressure tested.
